Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Manager

Lighthouse Lab Services has partnered with a premier hospital near Winchester, Virginia and we are seeking an enthusiastic Clinical Microbiology Lab Manager to oversee all microbiology operations and drive excellence in diagnostic testing, quality, and innovation. In this high-impact role, you’ll lead a skilled team, implement new technologies, and ensure patients receive fast, accurate, and reliable results every day.
What You’ll Lead & Deliver
Provide full operational oversight of the Microbiology department, including patient result reporting, quality control, quality assurance, and ongoing accreditation compliance.
Maintain advanced technical and supervisory competency, ensuring all team members—departmental and generalist—demonstrate documented proficiency.
Manage personnel scheduling and coordinate staffing with other Clinical Lab departments to ensure optimal coverage.
Supervise and mentor a team of technologists through performance evaluations, goal setting, coaching, and continuous growth initiatives.
Oversee and delegate training for new hires, ensuring completion of onboarding and competency checklists.
Participate in recruitment and talent acquisition efforts in collaboration with Lab Leadership and the Health System HR team.
Serve as the department’s subject matter expert, contributing to strategic planning and interdepartmental initiatives.
Evaluate, validate, and implement new technologies and methodologies alongside clinical and operational partners.
Oversee equipment maintenance schedules, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and documented correctly.
Troubleshoot technical and operational issues, ensuring appropriate corrective actions are taken and recorded.
Support the LIS, Quality Assurance, and Education teams to advance department performance and system-wide initiatives.
Maintain inventory and supply levels to ensure uninterrupted Microbiology services.
Collaborate with multiple departments performing Microbiology testing across various platforms to ensure consistency and quality.
Review, update, and create procedure manuals and policies in alignment with accreditation standards; communicate changes clearly to staff.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science required .
Minimum 5 years of Microbiology experience or 2 years of experience as a Microbiology Supervisor required.
Certifications
ASCP (or equivalent) board certification required.

Strong ability to mentor, coach, and supervise laboratory staff.
Demonstrated competency in serving patient populations across all ages—neonate to geriatric.
